Referencing and Formatting with AI Assistance; Thesis Writing Workshop Series – Session II
Date: 28 April 2026
The Department of English at Mukabbir University of Science & Technology successfully conducted the second session of its Thesis Writing Workshop Series on 28 April 2026. The session was titled “Referencing and Formatting: Managing Thesis Writing with AI Assistance” and was facilitated by Dr. Hafiz Nauman Ahmed, Head of the Department of English.
The workshop was designed to help students overcome common challenges associated with thesis writing by introducing effective referencing techniques, document formatting strategies, and the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in academic research.
Helping Students Overcome Thesis Writing Challenges
As students progress through their academic journey, thesis writing becomes one of the most significant and demanding academic tasks they encounter. While conducting research and developing arguments are essential components of a successful thesis, proper referencing and formatting are equally important for ensuring academic credibility, clarity, and professionalism.
Understanding these academic needs, the Department of English organized this workshop to provide practical guidance and hands-on learning opportunities for students working on their research projects.
Academic Integrity and the Importance of Referencing
The workshop began with an overview of academic integrity and the role of accurate referencing in scholarly writing. Dr. Hafiz Nauman Ahmed emphasized that proper citation is not merely a technical requirement but a fundamental part of ethical research.
Students were introduced to the importance of acknowledging sources correctly, avoiding plagiarism, and maintaining transparency in academic work. Through detailed explanations and relevant examples, participants learned how proper referencing strengthens the credibility of research and demonstrates respect for the intellectual contributions of other scholars.
Practical Guidance on Citation Management
A major focus of the session was citation management. Students often face difficulties when handling a large number of references during the thesis-writing process. To address this challenge, the workshop provided practical techniques for organizing research materials and maintaining accurate citation records.
Participants learned how to manage references systematically, create bibliographies efficiently, and ensure consistency in citation styles throughout their documents. These skills are essential for producing high-quality academic work and reducing errors that may affect the overall presentation of a thesis.
Improving Thesis Presentation through Document Formatting
Another significant component of the workshop was document formatting. Academic research requires adherence to specific formatting standards, and many students find this aspect time-consuming and challenging.
During the session, participants received guidance on structuring thesis documents, organizing chapters, formatting headings, managing page layouts, and maintaining consistency throughout their work. Practical demonstrations helped students understand how proper formatting contributes to readability, professionalism, and academic presentation.
Responsible Use of AI in Academic Writing
One of the most engaging aspects of the workshop was its focus on Artificial Intelligence as a supportive tool in academic writing. With AI technologies becoming increasingly accessible, students often seek guidance on how to use these tools effectively and responsibly.
Dr. Hafiz Nauman Ahmed discussed the potential benefits of AI in supporting research activities, improving productivity, and assisting with document organization. At the same time, he highlighted the importance of maintaining academic integrity and ensuring that AI is used as a support mechanism rather than a substitute for independent thinking and scholarly effort.
AI as a Support Tool, Not a Substitute for Original Thinking
Participants were introduced to practical ways AI can assist in thesis writing, including organizing research notes, improving document formatting, generating outlines, and enhancing writing efficiency.
The session emphasized that while AI can streamline certain aspects of the research process, critical analysis, original interpretation, and intellectual contribution must always remain the responsibility of the researcher. This balanced approach helped students understand how to use technology effectively while preserving the authenticity and originality of their academic work.
Ethical Considerations in AI-Assisted Research
The workshop also addressed common concerns related to the ethical use of AI. Discussions focused on responsible academic practices, transparency in the use of technological tools, and the importance of verifying information generated through AI-assisted platforms.
Students gained valuable insight into how emerging technologies can be used effectively without compromising scholarly standards, academic honesty, or the originality of research work.
Interactive Learning and Student Engagement
The interactive format of the session encouraged students to actively participate, ask questions, and share their experiences regarding thesis writing challenges. The exchange of ideas created a collaborative learning environment where participants could learn from both the facilitator and their peers.
Students particularly appreciated the practical demonstrations and real-world examples, which helped them connect theoretical concepts with their own research projects.
Strengthening Research Skills and Academic Confidence
By the end of the workshop, participants had acquired valuable skills that can significantly enhance the quality, organization, and efficiency of their thesis work. They left with a clearer understanding of citation management, document formatting, and the responsible integration of AI tools into the research process.
These competencies will not only support their current academic endeavors but will also contribute to their future professional and scholarly development.
