Percentage is a way to show marks earned as a part of the total marks, multiplied by 100. Both CGPA and percentage measure academic performance yet they serve purposes. CGPA follows the learning across semesters while percentage shows marks earned in individual exams. Knowing the difference helps students, parents and institutions choose the measure for the right situation. CGPA is the average of grade points earned across every subject and semester while percentage is a score that shows marks earned out of a total of 100.
CGPA, which stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average measures a student’s overall academic performance across every subject and semester using a point scale that is usually 4.0 or 10.0. Percentage shows marks earned compared to the marks in each exam. Both systems record academic performance,. They do so from different angles and with different levels of precision.
CGPA takes the grades a student earns and converts them into grade points. Then CGPA adds all those points together for the course. When a student receives a B+ in every one of six semesters CGPA will give that student a grade point average. The cumulative grade point average tells us how the student performed over time. This number does not come from an important test or result. Instead the cumulative grade point average shows the effort a student put in during the period.
Formula:
CGPA = Total of (GPA × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours
Example: CGPA Calculation
| Semester | GPA | Credit Hours | GPA × Credit Hours |
| 1st | 3.0 | 15 | 45 |
| 2nd | 3.5 | 18 | 63 |
| 3rd | 3.2 | 17 | 54.4 |
| Total | — | 50 | 162.4 |
Final CGPA
3.25
Percentage works in a way. If you score 82 out of 100 in a mathematics exam your percentage for that exam is 82%. The number 82% is clear and exact for that subject and that single test. The percentage shows how well you did at that moment. The percentage does not reveal how you performed in subjects. The percentage does not tell if you were consistent, across semesters. The percentage only gives a snapshot.
| Factor | CGPA | Percentage |
| Scale | 4.0 or 10.0 points | 0-100% |
| Exam pressure | Lower | Higher |
| Precision | Grade bands | Exact marks |
| International use | High | Low |
| Government jobs | Needs conversion | Direct cutoffs |
| Subject distinction | Hidden | Visible |
| Consistency measurement | Strong | Weak |
Advantages of CGPA
• Less Pressure: Small differences in marks may not change the grade very much.
• Better Learning: It encourages students to understand ideas of memorising facts.
• Easy Comparison: It lets students see how they do in semesters.
• Used: Many universities in Pakistan and abroad use CGPA to measure academic performance.
Advantages of Percentage
• to Understand: It shows the marks earned out of the total marks in a clear way.
• For Competitive Exams: It helps students reach the percentage needed for admissions and tests.
• Subject-Wise Performance: It shows how well a student does in each subject.
Which Is Better for Students?
It depends on the purpose:
• CGPA: It is better for seeing a student’s academic performance across all semesters.
• Percentage: It is better for seeing marks earned in each subject and comparing performance by subject.
Many universities accept both CGPA and percentage.
Both CGPA and percentage have their advantages and disadvantages. Students should know both. See how they influence their academic records. They should follow their university’s
rules. Focus on improving their academic performance.
| Feature | CGPA | Percentage |

| Scale | Varies (4.0, 7.0 10.0 depending on institution) | On a scale of 0–100% |
| Calculation | Based on grade points assigned to letter grades | Direct calculation from raw marks |
| Precision | Typically reported to one or two decimal places | Usually represented as whole numbers or with one decimal place |
